Santa Balloon 2023 - Updated 10/27/25

October 27, 2025--Santa is now completed--holding his beaded basket, with himself as the balloon.  The basket turned out to be a lot more difficult to put together than I had expected, and attaching it to the canvas turned out to be another challenge.  But overcome I did, and the result is below.  All in all, I really like this one.

PS - the beaded basket "chains" in the front look lighter than the chains in the back due to shadows.  The beads are actually all the same color.  After turning this into an ornament, I will place a white pom-pom on the end of his hat.

See below for earlier blog posts about this project.

Santa Balloon 2023 Completed

October 6, 2025--The stitching on this roly poly Balloon Santa is done and it's now ready for me to work up the little beaded gift basket (see project photo below).  This shouldn't be difficult since I've done many peyote beaded bracelets and the instructions look easy enough.  Stay tuned.

Santa Balloon Stitched to Date

September 26, 2025--I haven't worked on a Janet Zickler Casey Santa since April and this is one I've been looking forward to stitching because of the peyote beaded "gift basket" attached to the balloon (see project photo below).  I'm halfway done with the hat, and the beard will probably be next.  These Santas are always so much fun to do.

Here's my progress so far:

  1. Can you tell me where you obtained this canvas? I have stitched all of her Santa‘s (don’t know exact # but I believe it’s about 23 or 24) that were available through her distributor, but I know that certain ones are not available because they are only available through a class. Her website is not updated so I would not know how to go about taking a class to be able to obtain canvases, such as this she has not made available to the distributor.
Thanks for any info you can give me

    1. Hi Anonymous. This was a kit purchased in 2023 through the Northern Virginia Chapter of ANG. I believe it was also offered through the Shining Needle Society by Kate Gaunt. Hope you're able to find it. Have you written directly to Janet Zickler Casey?

    2. Yes, I have written to her email and she has told me whatever is available is through her distributor who my LNS has contacted, but they continue to have only a limited amount and say they don’t know when she will make additional designs available.

    3. This Santa was also a class taught at the ANG 2023 Seminar.

    4. My only suggestion is to go onto the ANG website and send an email to all members asking if anyone has the kit and are willing to sell it.

  2. Many thanks for the suggestion!

  1. Hello Brenda, I’m back with a question about the JCZ Santa Balloon which you helped me obtain through the Shining Needle Society. I have stitched it and persevered through the peyote box beading and brought it to my LNS for finishing. I must say the directions on attaching the box with its chains leave much to be desired as all she says is after you twist the chains and then use a sharp needle and put the threads through the mittens to the back. My question is my LNS is saying that all four chain should not be attached in the front and that the back two chains on the box should be attached on the back of the finished ornament. Just wondering if you had any thoughts on this or if you had taken the class and had access to more detailed directions on finishing this piece?
As always many thanks for your help.

    1. That's a good question. It appears that the project photo has the basket attached to the front and back of the ornament. I'll probably do that when I finish the ornament (the basket lines are loosely tied to the back of the ornament now, so this will be easy to manage).
